The Karachi Regional Plan 2047 will be the sixth consecutive plan that provides a framework for change in the Karachi Division
UNDP contributed to the 2nd comprehensive master plan for the city which was technically a success but could not be implemented fully as there was not legal component to support it.
Preparation of Karachi’s 5thmaster plan commenced in 2005. Its vision was to establish Karachi as “a world-class city and an attractive economic centre with a decent life for Karachiites”. The plan called for public-private-partnerships to enhance the service delivery.

Mohenjo Daro was constructed around 4,500 years before present, one of the largest urban settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation also known as the Harappan Civilisation.
Spanning two square miles, the Chaukhandi graveyard was established around 400 years before present. It features intricately carved tombs from the 17th and 18th centuries, showcasing warrior symbols on male graves and ornate jewelry motifs on female graves.
The sea has always been of fundamental importance for Karachi. The city originated as a small fishing village near the Indus Delta, known as Kolachi-jo-Kun, named after the fisherwoman Mai Kolachee.
Many Old Karachi's streets date back to the colonial era, showcasing architectural and structural characteristics typical of that time. Most buildings are constructed from either local or imported stone.
Many areas of the historic city retain fragments of pre-partition buildings, such as Korachi Zoo which was previously referred to as Ghandi Garden.
KMC was established in the 1933, located within an important building on M. A. Jinnah Road. Its establishment led to development of civic buildings within the city.
The 1st master plan was by a Swedish firm, who envisaged a federal government district, large university and high density residential areas along the Lyari corridor. The city population was predicted to reach 3m by the 2000.
The modern State of Pakistan was formed on 14th August 1947, leading to celebrations within the city.

Also developed with UNDP assistance, this time it included detailed planning and institutional recommendations but still lacked an overarching legal component.

In 2022, heavy rain in Sindh Province created huge floods that endangered lives and livelihoods.
