Have there been other Plans in the past?

Karachi has benefitted from many plans over the years, each of which influenced the shape of the city as it has developed to become what it is today.

These include:

Karachi Strategic Development Plan 2020 Greater Karachi Plan, 1951 Greater Karachi plan that established the city’s administrative functions. Karachi Resettlement Plan 1958 Karachi Resettlement Plan sought to accommodate newly arrived communities in self-contained satellite towns, with industrial and commercial locations spread along focal spines. Karachi Development Plan 1974-1985 The 1st Karachi Development Plan provided for rational road networks, upgrading Katchi Abadis, warehousing, improvements to basic services and utilities. Karachi Development Plan 2000 The 2nd Karachi Development Plan recommended a new institutional body called Karachi Division Physical Planning Agency to monitor implementation of planning activities within the city. The most recent master plan for Karachi aim to create a “world class city and an attractive economic centre with a decent life for Karachiites”. The plan aimed at creating residential and commercial development through urban renewal and establishment of a polycentric urban structure and a coastal development programme.
