What is the Karachi District?

Wikipedia identifies that modern Karachi was founded in 1729 as the settlement of Kolachi-jo-Goth during the rule of the Kalhora dynasty, and was unitially named Mai Kolachi. It was subsequently adjusted to Karachee in a 1742 Dutch report on a nearby shipwreck.

The city has since grown significantly, and is now one of the world’s largest megacities. With a population of over 20.4 million as measured by the Bureau of Statistics, the capital of Sindh province is now expanding in all directions as demand for urban growth increases the requirement to provide space for housing, business and other commercial activity.

This new regional plan includes the whole of the Karachi Division, and extends from the Arabian Sea in the south to the Kirshar National Park in the north, and the River Indus in the east. Although still contained within the District of Karachi, the land comprised within the protected natural Kirthar National Park which lies to the north of the Hub Dam, does not form part of the Regional Plan.

The NEW Regional Plan includes the entire Karachi Division, consisting of :

7 Administrative Districts

Federal And Provincial
Governments Landholding Agencies

6 Cantonments

The Plan will address as much the needs of the growing metropolis, as its rural hinterland.
